For PDFs that hit a 1 MB limit

Online application systems often set an upload limit such as 1 MB per document. A diploma, transcript or ID scanned with a phone, however, easily grows to several megabytes. Instead of guessing which compression level will be enough, on this page you simply state the limit and the tool does the rest.

The tool shrinks the photos and scans in your document step by step: it starts at 150 DPI, goes down to 72 DPI if needed and picks the sharpest version that fits under 1 MB. Text is not turned into images; it stays selectable and searchable. “1 MB” is counted as 1,000,000 bytes, so your file stays under the limit whether a system counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes.

If your PDF is already under 1 MB, it is left untouched. If the document can't fit into 1 MB without becoming hard to read, the tool tells you plainly the smallest size it could reach; in that case, deleting unnecessary pages or splitting the document helps.

How to get a PDF under 1 MB in 3 steps

Quality, limits and what to know

  • The sharpest version is chosen: The tool tries high quality first and shrinks only as much as needed; a document that easily fits under 1 MB isn't blurred for nothing.

  • Text is preserved: Pages are not turned into images. Text, links, bookmarks, form fields and the OCR text layer of scanned documents are kept as they are.

  • 72 DPI minimum: To keep scanned text readable, images are never reduced below 72 DPI. That is why high-resolution scans with many pages don't always fit under 1 MB; the tool tells you clearly when this happens.

  • If it doesn't fit: Remove unnecessary pages with the Delete PDF Pages tool, or split the document into parts with Split PDF and upload them separately.

  • Size limit: Up to 25 MB per upload. Files are deleted from the server automatically after about 10 minutes.

Privacy and automatic deletion

Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.

The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.

Is compressing a PDF to under 1 MB free?

Yes. The tool is free and works without an account. Guests have a 24-hour usage allowance per tool; a free account lets you process more files.

Will the compressed file definitely be under 1 MB?

When the tool finds a result that fits the limit, the file is under 1,000,000 bytes; this holds for systems that count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes and for those that count it as 1,048,576 bytes. If it can't fit, it clearly shows the smallest size it could reach.

Why didn't my PDF fit under 1 MB?

In high-resolution scans with many pages, images are never reduced below 72 DPI so they stay readable. In that case, delete unnecessary pages or split the document and upload it as several files. Large text-only PDFs can also shrink only so much.

How much quality is lost?

Only as much as needed. The tool tries high quality first; if the file fits the limit, it doesn't shrink it any further. Text stays sharp and selectable in every case; only photos and scans are reduced.

Can I choose 500 KB or another limit?
