Why reduce PDF size?

Phone scans, photo-heavy reports and catalogues easily grow to tens of megabytes. Email services limit attachment sizes, and online application portals often set even stricter limits of a few megabytes per file. Compressing a PDF helps you get under those limits while keeping the document readable.

The Dönüştür.net PDF compressor doesn’t rebuild your document – it optimises it in place: high-resolution photos and scans are downscaled according to the level you choose, embedded fonts keep only the characters actually used, and unnecessary data is removed. Text stays selectable and searchable, and links, bookmarks and form fields are kept. When it finishes, the original size, the new size and the percentage saved are shown on screen.

How to compress a PDF in 3 steps

  2. Choose a level or a limit: Select Low, Medium or High compression; if a specific size is required, pick a target such as 1 MB or 500 KB under “File size limit”. Then click “Compress PDF”.

Compression levels and what to know

  • Low: Images are reduced to at most 150 DPI and stored with high JPEG quality. Closest to the original; suitable for documents you will print.

  • Medium: Images are reduced to 120 DPI with balanced quality – usually the best trade-off for reading on screen and emailing.

  • High: Images are reduced to 100 DPI with strong compression. Produces the smallest file, so try it first for strict upload limits. Photos may lose some detail; text stays sharp at every level.

  • Text is preserved: Pages are not turned into images; text stays selectable, copyable and searchable. Links, bookmarks, form fields and the OCR text layer of scanned documents are also kept as they are.

  • Biggest savings on image-heavy documents: Photo- and scan-heavy PDFs shrink noticeably. Text-heavy PDFs often shrink too, because embedded fonts and unnecessary data are trimmed; files that are already optimised may gain little. If nothing can be saved, your file never gets bigger – you download your original unchanged.

  • Still too big? Choose a file size limit; the tool finds the sharpest version that fits. If it still doesn’t fit, remove unnecessary pages with the Delete PDF Pages tool or split the document into several parts with Split PDF.

Privacy and automatic deletion

Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.

The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.

How do I get a PDF under 1 MB?

Choose 1 MB under “File size limit”: the tool shrinks images step by step and gives you the sharpest version that fits under 1 MB. If it can’t fit, it tells you plainly the smallest size it could reach; in that case, remove unnecessary pages with the Delete PDF Pages tool or split the document into parts with Split PDF.

Which compression level should I choose?

Low for documents you will print, Medium for email and everyday use, and High for application forms with strict size limits.

Does compression reduce quality?

Only images are reduced, so text stays sharp at every level. In photos and scans, detail decreases slightly as the level goes up; at Low the result looks very close to the original.

Can I select text in the compressed PDF?

Yes. Pages are not turned into images, so text stays selectable, copyable and searchable. Links and form fields are kept too.

Why didn’t my file get smaller?

Your file may already be optimised: PDFs with small images, or ones that have been compressed before, leave little to reduce. In that case your file is not made bigger – you download your original. The biggest savings are on photo-heavy and scanned documents.

How large a file can I compress?

You can upload up to 25 MB per file.

Are my files safe?
