GS1 This tool creates the barcode image. Valid GTIN numbers for retail are issued by GS1; the tool never makes up numbers.

Print at 100% scale (actual size) and test-scan a trial print before using the barcode.

How is a barcode created?

A barcode turns a number or a short text into bars that a scanner can recognise in an instant. Retail products use the 13-digit EAN-13 and small packages the EAN-8, products for the US and Canada use UPC-A, warehouses, shipping and internal use rely on Code 128 with letters and digits, GS1-128 carries data such as batch numbers or expiry dates in a standard form, and cartons and outer packaging use ITF-14.

Dönüştür.net's barcode tool draws these six types with encoders we wrote ourselves, entirely in your browser. As you type the number, the last digit – the check digit – is calculated: type 12 digits and the 13th is added; type a wrong check digit and the correct one is shown. You can download the barcode as PNG, SVG or PDF, or prepare an A4 label sheet from a list.

The tool does not issue barcode numbers and never suggests random “869…” numbers. The valid GTIN numbers for products sold in shops or on marketplaces are issued by GS1 (in Türkiye, GS1 Türkiye); you enter the number assigned to your company here and the tool prepares the barcode image. For codes read only within your own organisation – shelves, assets or shipments – you can use Code 128.

02

Create a barcode in 3 steps

  1. Choose the type and type the number: Choose the barcode type and type your number or code. The preview updates as you type; a missing check digit is added and a wrong one is corrected.

  2. Set the size and output: Choose PNG, SVG or PDF and, if needed, enter the width and height in millimetres. For many labels, paste your list on the “Label sheet (A4)” tab and choose your label paper.

  3. Download and test: Press “Create barcode” and download your file. Print at 100% scale and scan a trial print with your phone or scanner before printing in bulk.

03

When is it used?

  • E-commerce and marketplaces: Creating EAN-13 barcodes for product labels and packaging with the GTIN issued by GS1.

  • Warehouse and shelf labels: Labelling shelves, bins and item codes with Code 128 and scanning them with a handheld terminal.

  • Shipping cartons: Printing the 14-digit ITF-14 barcode with its frame on cartons and outer packaging.

  • Batch and expiry dates: Carrying the batch number and expiry date next to the GTIN in a standard GS1-128 barcode.

  • Internal codes: Turning order, job or sample codes with letters and digits into Code 128 barcodes.

  • Libraries and asset tracking: Preparing an A4 label sheet from your list of books, devices and assets in one go.

04

Print quality and scannability

  • 100% scale: When printing, choose actual size (100%) instead of “Fit to page”. PDF and SVG files carry the size in millimetres; PNG files are saved at the resolution you choose (300 or 600 dpi), and that value is written into the file.

  • Quiet zone: An empty margin (the quiet zone) is kept to the left and right of the barcode so the scanner can find where it starts and ends. Do not narrow this space when you crop the barcode or place it in your design.

  • Minimum size: At 100% an EAN-13 measures 37.29 × 25.93 mm; GS1 recommends staying between 80% and 200% of that size. The tool keeps EAN and UPC barcodes within this range and draws ITF-14 at the sizes recommended for cartons.

  • Colour and background: Bars should be dark and the background light. Black bars on white are the safest choice; red, yellow or light bars and dark backgrounds make scanning harder.

  • Thermal and label printers: On thermal printers with low resolutions such as 203 dpi, thin bars can print thicker. Print the barcode slightly larger and scan a test label before a production run.

  • Vector output: SVG and PDF are vector formats; the bars stay sharp even when you resize them in a design program. Prefer these formats for packaging artwork that goes to a printer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I get a barcode number?

Barcode numbers (GTINs) for products sold in shops, supermarkets or on marketplaces are issued by GS1 – in Türkiye by GS1 Türkiye. Your company receives a company prefix and numbers its products with it. This tool does not issue numbers; it prepares the barcode image for the number assigned to you.

What is the difference between EAN-13 and Code 128?

EAN-13 carries only 13 digits and identifies products in retail; its last digit is a check digit. Code 128 can carry letters, digits and symbols and suits warehouse, shipping and internal codes, but it does not replace a product barcode at a supermarket checkout.

Can I create labels in bulk from an Excel list?

Yes. Paste a column copied from Excel into the “Label sheet (A4)” tab, or choose your list as a CSV or TXT file. One code goes on each line; you can add label text after a comma, semicolon or tab. Up to 1,000 labels are prepared at a time; rows with errors are listed and not printed.

Which label paper should I use?

The tool has A4 layouts for 3 × 8 (70 × 37 mm), 3 × 7 (70 × 42.3 mm), 4 × 10 (52.5 × 29.7 mm), 2 × 7 (105 × 42.3 mm) and 3 × 11 (70 × 25.4 mm) labels. If your paper is different, enter the columns, rows, label size and margins in millimetres under “Custom size”.

Can I scan the barcode with my phone?

Yes, most phones read EAN, UPC and Code 128 barcodes with the camera app or a barcode scanner app. Testing the barcode on paper rather than on a screen gives a result closer to real use.

Is creating barcodes free?

Yes. The tool is free, needs no account and has no daily limit; all the work is done on your device.

Are my numbers or my list sent anywhere?

No. The barcodes are drawn in your browser with our own code. Your numbers, your list and the resulting files are not sent to our server; the page is served with a security policy that technically prevents this, and no analytics or advertising scripts run on this page.
