Why extract the audio from a video?
When you film a talk, lecture, concert or interview on your phone, it's often the sound you need, not the picture. Listening to a video means keeping the screen on, and the file is many times larger than the audio itself. Once the audio is saved as an MP3, you can play the recording in a music player, in the car or in a podcast app, and share it easily.
The MP4 to MP3 tool takes the audio track of the video you upload and converts it to a high-quality MP3 (about 190 kbps, variable bitrate). The picture, subtitles and cover image are not included in the output. Metadata such as the location your phone stores in the video is not copied into the MP3 either.
Besides MP4, iPhone MOV videos and M4V, WEBM, MKV, AVI and 3GP files are supported. You can upload one video of up to 95 MB and up to 3 hours long at a time.

Quality, privacy and limitations
High quality: The MP3 is encoded with a variable bitrate of about 190 kbps, which means loss too small to hear and a reasonable file size. The audio can't be better than the sound in the video.
Audio only: If the video has more than one audio track (e.g. different languages), the first one is used. The picture, subtitles and cover image are not converted.
Metadata removed: Information your phone stores in the video, such as location, device model and recording date, is not copied into the MP3.
Limitations: One video at a time, up to 95 MB and 3 hours. Videos without an audio track can't be converted; the tool tells you so clearly.

Privacy and automatic deletion
Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.
The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is converting MP4 to MP3 free?
Yes. The tool is free and works without an account. Guests have a 24-hour usage allowance per tool; a free account lets you convert more files.
Can I get the audio from MOV videos I filmed on my iPhone?
Yes. You can upload MOV files directly; there's no need to convert them to MP4 first. M4V, WEBM, MKV, AVI and 3GP are supported too.
What quality is the MP3?
The audio is converted to MP3 with a variable bitrate of about 190 kbps. That's hard to tell apart from the original when listening, but the result can't be better than the sound in the video.
Can I download an MP3 from a YouTube link?
No. The tool only works with video files on your own device; it doesn't download videos from websites. Before converting copyrighted content, make sure you have the right to use it.
Is the location data from the video kept in the MP3?
No. Metadata your phone stores in the video, such as location, device model and recording date, is not copied into the MP3.
What is the file size limit?
