    Why convert JPG to PNG?

    JPG uses lossy compression to keep photos in small files. Every time you edit and re-save a JPG, this compression is applied again, and blur and blocky smudges (artefacts) build up in the image. PNG, on the other hand, is lossless: no matter how many times you open and save the image, the pixels stay the same.

    The JPG to PNG tool converts your images to PNG without any additional loss. It comes in handy if you are going to edit, design or prepare for print, or need to upload to a system that accepts only PNG. For a single image you get a PNG directly; for several images, one ZIP containing all the PNGs.

    One thing to note up front: converting to PNG does not bring back detail the JPG has already lost, and it does not make the background transparent by itself. The image is kept exactly as it looks in the JPG. You can upload up to 20 images and 25 MB in total at a time.

    How to convert JPG to PNG in 4 steps

    1. Select your JPGs: Drag your images with the JPG or JPEG extension into the area above or click to select them.

    2. Check the list: Use the thumbnails to make sure you have picked the right images; remove any you don't want with ✕ and add more with the “Add images” button.

    When is it useful?

    • Getting ready to edit: Converting images you will edit several times in programs such as Photoshop, GIMP or Canva to PNG, so they don't lose quality with every save.

    • Systems that require PNG: Some app stores, design templates and software interfaces accept only PNG image uploads.

    • Screen and presentation graphics: Switching images that contain text to a lossless format before using them in presentations and documents.

    • Pre-print archive: Preventing images headed for a print shop or printing service from being recompressed during intermediate edits.

    • Preparing for a transparent background: Starting from PNG if you plan to remove the background later in an editing program; PNG supports transparency (the background is not removed automatically during conversion).

    • Removing location data: Deleting GPS and device information from a phone photo before sharing it; this information is not copied into the PNG.

    Quality, file size and limitations

    • Lossless output: No new compression loss is added when converting to PNG; the image is saved exactly as it appears in the JPG and at the same resolution.

    • Larger files: Because PNG is lossless, the PNG version of a photo is usually 3–10 times the size of the JPG. If your goal is to make the file smaller, try WEBP instead of PNG.

    • Lost quality does not come back: Blur and blocky artefacts already present in the JPG are also visible in the PNG. From this point on, PNG prevents any further loss.

    • Orientation and colour: The orientation stored by the phone is applied, so the image opens the right way up. A colour profile, if present, is embedded in the PNG. CMYK JPGs prepared for print are converted to RGB so they can be used on screen.

    • Metadata and limitations: EXIF information (GPS location, device model, capture date) is not copied into the PNG. Up to 20 images and 25 MB in total per conversion; images above 50 megapixels are rejected.

    Privacy and automatic deletion

    Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.

    The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is converting JPG to PNG free?

    Yes. The tool is free and works without an account. Guests have a 24-hour usage allowance per tool; a free account lets you convert more files.

    Does converting to PNG improve quality?

    No. PNG cannot bring back detail the JPG has already lost. But because PNG is lossless, no further quality loss occurs, however many times you edit and save the image from now on.

    Will the background become transparent?

    No. The conversion keeps the image as it is; a white background stays white. Since PNG supports transparency, you can remove the background later in an editing program.

    Why is the PNG file so much bigger than the JPG?

    PNG stores every pixel losslessly. For photos, this means files several times larger than the JPG. This is expected and not a quality problem.

    Can I convert several JPGs at once?

    Yes. You can upload up to 20 images at a time (25 MB in total). With several images, all the PNGs download as one ZIP file.

    Can I convert iPhone photos to PNG?

    Yes, if your iPhone photo is a JPG. If it is in HEIC format, first convert it to JPG with the HEIC to JPG tool; you can then convert it to PNG if needed.

    Can I use it on my phone?

    Yes. The tool works in the browser; on Android or iPhone, you can select your images in Chrome or Safari and download the PNG straight to your phone. There is no app to install.

    Are my uploaded images stored?

    No. Your images are deleted from the server as soon as the conversion is finished. The PNG or ZIP file is kept only so you can download it and is deleted automatically within about 10 minutes.
