Why add page numbers to a PDF?

In theses, assignments, reports and contracts, page numbers help readers find their way, and many institutions require them as a formatting rule. Yet when you merge several files or turn a scanned document into a PDF, the numbers are often missing.

This tool adds page numbers to every page of your PDF as real text. You choose the position of the number (top or bottom; left, centre or right), its format (“1”, “1 / 12” or “- 1 -”), its size and the starting number. If you like, the cover page stays unnumbered and numbering starts on the second page.

On landscape and rotated pages too, the number is placed upright in the right corner, following the way the page is displayed. The rest of the page doesn't change.

02

How to add page numbers to a PDF in 3 steps

  1. Upload your PDF: Drag your file into the area above or click to select it (up to 25 MB).

  2. Choose the settings: Pick the position, format and size; if needed, change the starting number or tick the option not to number the cover page.

  3. Download: Click “Add numbers”; the numbered PDF is downloaded.

03

When is it useful?

  • Theses and assignments: Adding the page numbers the formatting rules require, even at the last minute.

  • Merged documents: Numbering PDFs merged from different sources continuously from start to finish.

  • Contracts and official letters: Adding numbers in the “1 / 12” format that show no pages are missing.

  • Appendices: Numbering appendices that continue a document from where it left off, by changing the starting number.

  • Scanned documents: Adding page numbers that also show up in print to scans that have none.

04

Options, quality and limits

  • Position and format: Six positions (top and bottom; left, centre, right), three formats (“1”, “1 / 12”, “- 1 -”) and three sizes. The number sits about 8 mm in from the edge.

  • Starting number and cover: Numbering can start from any number you like. If you skip the cover page, the first page stays unnumbered and numbering starts on the second page.

  • Real text: Numbers are added as text, not as images; they look sharp and can be selected. The rest of the page is not re-encoded.

  • Rotated pages: On landscape or rotated pages, the number goes in the right corner, following the way the page is displayed.

  • Limits: Up to 25 MB and 5,000 pages per file. For encrypted PDFs, use the Unlock PDF tool first.

Privacy and automatic deletion

Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.

The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is adding page numbers to a PDF free?

Yes. The tool is free and works without an account. Guests have a 24-hour usage allowance per tool; a free account lets you process more files.

Can I leave the cover page without a number?

Yes. Tick “Don't number the cover page” and the first page stays unnumbered, with numbering starting on the second page.

Can numbering start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Type the number you want in the “Starting number” field; for example, you can start the appendices that continue a document at 25.

How is the total in the “1 / 12” format calculated?

The total is the number of the last numbered page. If you skip the cover page or choose a different starting number, the total is calculated accordingly.

Is the number in the right place on landscape pages?

Yes. The number is placed upright in the corner you choose, following the way the page appears on screen.

Is my PDF stored?

No. Your uploaded PDF is deleted from the server as soon as processing finishes. The numbered PDF is kept only so you can download it and is deleted automatically within about 10 minutes.
