What is booklet layout for?

To print a PDF as a booklet, printing the pages in order isn't enough: for page 1 to end up on the front cover, the last page on the back cover and everything else in the right order once the paper is folded, the pages have to be arranged on the sheets in a special sequence. Setting this up by hand is fiddly and easy to get wrong.

This tool works out the order for you. Each side of a landscape A4 sheet holds two A5 pages: the first side has the last page and page 1, its back has page 2 and the second-to-last page, and so on. If the page count isn't a multiple of 4, blank pages are added at the end.

All you have to do is print the PDF double-sided with “Flip on short edge” selected, then fold the stack in half. Pages aren't turned into images, so text stays sharp and selectable.

How to make a booklet from a PDF in 3 steps

  1. Upload your PDF: Drag your file into the area above or click to select it (up to 25 MB and 500 pages).

  2. Choose Booklet: “Booklet” is already selected. A4 paper gives an A5 booklet; for an A4-sized booklet, choose A3 paper. The diagram shows which pages land on the front and back of each sheet.

  3. Download and print: Click “Create PDF” and download it; print double-sided, flipping on the short edge, then fold the sheets in half.

03

When is it useful?

  • School and courses: Handing out workbooks, revision packs or reading texts to students as A5 booklets.

  • Weddings and ceremonies: Printing a wedding programme, an order of service or an event programme on your home printer.

  • Print and copy shops: Putting a customer's PDF into booklet order, ready for stapling.

  • Manuals and leaflets: Printing short manuals, menus, newsletters or zines in a folded format.

  • Reading on the go: Printing a long article as a small booklet that fits in your bag.

04

Options, quality and limits

  • Page order: The sheet sides run (last, 1), (2, second-to-last), (third-to-last, 3), (4, …). The page count is rounded up to a multiple of 4 with blank pages at the end; the result tells you how many were added.

  • Paper and size: A4 paper gives an A5 booklet and A3 paper an A4 booklet; Letter paper is available too and gives a half-letter booklet. Pages of a different size are fitted into their half of the sheet with their proportions kept, and centred.

  • Printing: Print double-sided (duplex) and choose “Flip on short edge”. If your printer can't print on both sides automatically, do a test run with a single sheet first.

  • Quality: A4 pages shrink to about 70% to fit A5; text stays vector, prints sharply and is selectable. Links are no longer clickable and form fields are flattened onto the page.

  • Limits: Up to 25 MB and 500 pages per file. Very thick booklets (more than 40 pages) are hard to fold; splitting the document into several booklets gives a neater result.

Privacy and automatic deletion

Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.

The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I print the booklet?

Open the downloaded PDF and, in the print settings, choose double-sided printing and “Flip on short edge”, with the scale set to “Actual size” or 100%. Fold the printed sheets in half without changing their order and, if needed, staple them along the spine.

What if my printer can't print double-sided?

First print only the odd pages (1, 3, 5…), turn the stack over the way your printer needs and put it back in, then print the even pages (2, 4, 6…). Which way the paper has to go back in varies from printer to printer, so try it with a single sheet first.

Why should I choose “Flip on short edge”?

Booklet pages are printed on landscape paper. If you flip on the long edge, the back comes out upside down; if you flip on the short edge, front and back face the same way and the pages read in the right order once folded.

What if the page count isn't a multiple of 4?

Each sheet carries 4 booklet pages, so blank pages are added at the end to bring the total up to a multiple of 4. For example, a 17-page PDF is padded out to 20 pages and printed on 5 sheets.

Can I make an A4-sized booklet?

Yes. Choose A3 as the paper: each A3 sheet holds two A4 pages, and once folded you get an A4 booklet. With A4 paper the result is an A5 booklet, and with Letter paper a half-letter booklet (5.5 × 8.5 in).

Does the text stay selectable?

Yes. Pages are scaled down and placed without being turned into images; text stays vector, prints crisply and can be selected and searched in the PDF.

Are my files stored?

No. Your uploaded PDF is deleted from the server as soon as processing finishes. The booklet PDF is kept only so you can download it and is deleted automatically within about 10 minutes.
