Characters or words: what does each limit count?
Essays, articles, application forms, product descriptions and ad copy usually come with a limit: “at least 500 words”, “no more than 2,000 characters including spaces”, “keep the SMS to one message”. What the limit counts matters, because the same text measures very differently in characters and in words.
A character count includes letters, digits, punctuation and spaces; “characters without spaces” leaves spaces and line breaks out. A word count counts every meaningful run of characters between spaces once: “don't”, “e-mail” and “1,245.50” are one word each. SMS and X (Twitter) count by their own rules, which is why a single accented or special character can cut the length of one SMS from 160 to 70.
This tool counts as you type: characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs, reading and speaking time, and the X, SMS, SEO title and meta description limits all appear on one screen. You can also open a Word (.docx) or text file. Counting happens in your browser; your text is never sent to a server.
02
Count words and characters in 3 steps
Paste your text or open a file: Paste your writing into the box or choose a TXT, MD, CSV or Word (.docx) file with “Open file”. The numbers update instantly as you type.
Check the limits: Look at the character and word boxes, then at the X, SMS, SEO title and meta description rows. A row over its limit turns red; the SMS row tells you how many messages the text will be split into.
Download the report if you like: “Download report” saves all the numbers as a TXT file and the most frequent words as a CSV file that opens in Excel.
03
Who counts, and why?
Students and academics: Making sure an essay, abstract, grant application or journal article stays within its word or character limit.
Job and scholarship applications: Filling in cover letter and motivation fields limited to, say, 1,500 characters without going over.
SEO and content writers: Keeping page titles around 60 and meta descriptions around 155 characters; checking an article's word count and most frequent words.
Social media: Checking the 280 limit of an X post, the 2,200 limit of an Instagram caption and the 100 limit of a YouTube title before you publish.
SMS campaigns: Seeing how many messages a bulk SMS will be split into and how special characters push that number up.
Talks and presentations: Estimating how many minutes a text takes to read aloud and trimming a speech to fit the time.

Counting rules and limits
Characters: Every mark that shows as one character counts as one, and so do spaces and line breaks. An emoji like “👍🏽” or a letter with an accent counts as one character even when it is built from several parts.
Words: Every run separated by spaces that contains at least one letter or digit is a word. Contractions (don't), hyphenated words (e-mail), numbers (1,245.50) and links count as one word; a dash standing alone (“—”) does not. Languages written without spaces, such as Japanese and Chinese, are split with the browser's word segmenter.
Sentences and paragraphs: Sentences are counted by the browser's language-aware segmenter; abbreviations like “Dr.” may occasionally be taken as a sentence end. Every non-empty line is a paragraph, just as Word counts paragraph marks.
Reading and speaking time: Reading time uses 200 words per minute, and you can switch to slow (150) or fast (250). Speaking time uses 130 words per minute. These are averages; real times depend on how difficult the text is.
SMS and X: An SMS in the standard GSM alphabet holds 160 characters (153 per part when split). Characters outside that alphabet, such as ş, ğ or an emoji, switch the message to Unicode: 70 characters (67 per part). On X a link counts as 23 characters and emoji and CJK characters count as 2; the limit is 280.
Limits and privacy: Texts of up to 3 million characters can be counted; above 150,000 characters counting runs in the background so the page never freezes. Files can be up to 25 MB. Your text is not uploaded or stored and is cleared from memory when you close the tab.

Privacy and automatic deletion
This tool does not send your file to our server: all processing happens in your browser, on your device. The page is served with a security policy (Content-Security-Policy) that technically prevents the file's contents from being sent anywhere; no analytics or advertising scripts run on this page.
The result file is also created on your device and only you download it. It is cleared from the browser's memory when you close the tab or choose “New file”. Our server keeps no file name or content record of this processing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the character count include spaces?
Both numbers are shown: “Characters” counts spaces and line breaks too, “Without spaces” counts only letters, digits and punctuation. If a form says “2,000 characters including spaces”, use the first number; if it says “without spaces”, use the second.
Why can the word count differ from Microsoft Word?
Both split words at spaces, so for plain text the numbers are usually the same. Differences mostly come from Word counting footnotes, text boxes or stand-alone dashes and bullets differently. Here, marks without any letter or digit (—, •) are not counted as words.
How many characters fit in one SMS?
160 characters if the text uses only the standard GSM alphabet, which covers English letters and many Western European accents. A single character outside it, such as an emoji or the Turkish ş, switches the message to Unicode and one SMS then holds 70 characters. The tool shows which case applies and how many messages your text needs.
How is the X (Twitter) character limit calculated?
X counts every link as 23 characters whatever its length, and every emoji and every Chinese, Japanese or Korean character as 2; Latin letters count as 1. The tool counts by that rule and turns the row red once you pass 280.
Can I count the words in a Word document?
Yes. Choose your .docx file with “Open file”: the body text is read into the box and the numbers appear immediately. The file never leaves your computer or phone. Older .doc files need to be saved as .docx first.
How is reading time calculated?
The word count is divided by 200 words per minute; you can change the speed to 150 or 250. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, which is a good starting point for planning a talk or a video.
Is the text I type saved anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser, and the page comes with a security policy that technically blocks it from connecting to anything outside. Your text is never sent to a server and is cleared from memory when you close the tab.
