How do you find the difference between two texts?
Spotting what changed in a new version of a contract, which sentences were rewritten in an edited article or where two lists part ways is tiring and error-prone by eye. A single changed figure or comma slips past easily.
Compare tools match two texts line by line and work out the smallest set of changes that turns one into the other: shared lines stay as they are and only added and removed lines are marked. When the changed words inside a line are highlighted too, the difference is clear at a glance.
This tool compares two texts as you type or paste: removed lines in red, added lines in green, the changed words inside a line marked separately, long unchanged stretches folded away. You can also compare word by word instead of line by line. Download the result as a unified .diff file and a shareable HTML report. Everything happens in your browser.
02
Compare two texts in 3 steps
Add the texts: Paste the old text on the left and the new one on the right, or choose a TXT, CSV, MD, JSON or Word (.docx) file with “Open file”.
Review the differences: The result appears by itself. Red lines exist only in the old text, green lines only in the new one; changed words inside a line are marked more strongly. You can ignore spaces or upper/lower case.
Download the report: “Download report” gives you the differences as a unified .diff file and a coloured HTML report that opens in any browser.
03
Who compares, and why?
Legal and contracts: Seeing, clause by clause, what changed between two versions of a contract, specification or offer.
Writers and editors: Tracking which sentences changed in an edited text, word by word.
Teachers and students: Comparing the first and final version of an assignment to see the corrections.
Developers: Comparing two configuration files, log outputs or JSON documents line by line.
Data and accounting: Finding added, removed and changed rows between two CSV exports.
Translation and localisation: Seeing what was updated in a new version of the source text and translating only that.
04
Comparison rules and limits
Method: Lines are matched with the smallest number of changes (the Myers diff algorithm); shared lines are kept and only lines that were really added or removed are shown. Changed line pairs get a second, word-level comparison.
Options: “Ignore spaces” treats leading/trailing spaces and runs of spaces as equal; “Ignore case” compares after lowercasing with the rules of the page language. Word mode compares the whole text word by word.
Files: TXT, MD, CSV, JSON, XML, HTML and Word (.docx) can be opened; the encoding (UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1254) is detected automatically. CSV files are compared line by line as text.
Long texts: Texts of up to 5 million characters are compared; up to 4,000 rows are shown on screen and the full result is in the downloaded report. For texts with a very large number of differences, the middle part may be shown as one changed block; you are told when that happens.
Downloads: The unified .diff file uses the standard format that software tools (git, patch) read; the HTML report opens in any browser and contains the coloured differences.
Privacy: Texts are compared on your device, never sent to a server and never stored. They are cleared from memory when you close the tab.

Privacy and automatic deletion
This tool does not send your file to our server: all processing happens in your browser, on your device. The page is served with a security policy (Content-Security-Policy) that technically prevents the file's contents from being sent anywhere; no analytics or advertising scripts run on this page.
The result file is also created on your device and only you download it. It is cleared from the browser's memory when you close the tab or choose “New file”. Our server keeps no file name or content record of this processing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the difference between two texts?
Paste the old text in the left box and the new one in the right box; the differences appear immediately. Red lines exist only in the old text, green lines only in the new one, and the changed words inside a line are marked too.
Can I compare two Word documents?
Yes. Use “Open file” in both boxes to choose your .docx files; their body text is read and compared. Formatting (bold, colours, table layout) is not compared, only the text.
What is the difference between line and word mode?
Line mode matches the texts line by line and marks the words inside changed lines; it suits code, lists and CSV. Word mode compares the whole text word by word, which reads better for prose made of paragraphs.
Can I ignore differences in spaces and capital letters?
Yes. “Ignore spaces” does not count spaces at the start and end of lines or runs of spaces as differences; “Ignore case” treats “London” and “london” as the same.
Can I compare two CSV or Excel lists?
CSV files are compared line by line, so added, removed and changed records show up. Convert an Excel file to CSV first; the CSV ↔ Excel tool does that.
How do I share the result?
“Download report” gives you two files: a unified .diff file that tools like git and patch read, and an HTML report with the coloured differences that opens in any browser. You can send the HTML report by email.
Are my texts sent anywhere?
No. The comparison runs in your browser, and the page comes with a security policy that technically blocks connections to the outside. You can safely use it for contracts and texts with personal data.
