Why compress an audio file?
A long lecture recording, a podcast episode or a high-bitrate music file can be too large for email attachments and application forms. Many systems set an attachment limit of 10 or 25 MB, and messaging apps make large files hard to send too.
The Compress Audio tool re-encodes your file as a new MP3 at the level you choose: 128 kbps for music, 96 kbps for a balance, and 64 kbps mono for speech. A 320 kbps MP3 shrinks by about 60% at 128 kbps and by about 80% at the speech level.
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, WMA, AMR, AIFF and CAF files are supported; the output is always an MP3. If your file is already smaller than the level you choose, it won't be made bigger.

How to shrink an audio file in 3 steps

Levels, quality and limitations
Music (128 kbps): The recommended level for music; for most listeners it's hard to tell apart from the original.
Balanced (96 kbps): A good balance for recordings that mix music and speech; if you listen closely, you may hear a slight difference in music.
Speech (64 kbps, mono): For voice notes, lectures, podcasts and meeting recordings; the file becomes as small as it gets. The loss is noticeable in music.
Never bigger: If your file already has a lower bitrate than the level you choose, the result won't be smaller; for MP3 files you then get the original file back unchanged. Tags such as song title and artist are kept.
Limitations: One file at a time, up to 95 MB and 3 hours.

Privacy and automatic deletion
Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.
The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.

Is compressing audio free?
Yes. The tool is free and works without an account. Guests have a 24-hour usage allowance per tool; a free account lets you process more files.
Which level should I choose?
Choose “Music” (128 kbps) for music, “Balanced” (96 kbps) for recordings that mix music and speech, and “Speech” (64 kbps, mono) for recordings that contain only speech.
How much smaller will my file be?
It depends on the source. A 320 kbps MP3 shrinks by about 60% at the “Music” level and by about 80% at the “Speech” level. WAV files shrink by more than 90%. The result screen shows the size before and after.
What happens if my file is already small?
The tool never makes your file bigger. If your MP3 is already smaller than the level you choose, you get the original file back unchanged, and the result screen tells you so.
Can I compress WAV or M4A files too?
Yes. MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, WMA, AMR, AIFF and CAF files are supported; the output is always an MP3.
Are the song title and artist kept?
Yes. Tags such as song title, artist and album are kept. Album cover art is not.
Are my files stored?
No. The file you upload is deleted from the server as soon as compression is finished. The result is kept only so you can download it and is deleted automatically within about 10 minutes.
