Why convert WAV to MP3?
WAV is a format that stores audio uncompressed: studio recordings, audio recorders and many editing programs produce WAV files. The quality is high, but the files are very large; one minute of stereo WAV takes up about 10 MB. A file like that is hard to send by email, share in a messaging app or keep on your phone.
The WAV to MP3 tool converts your recording to a high-quality MP3 (about 190 kbps, variable bitrate). The file usually shrinks to around a seventh of its size, and the difference is often inaudible.
You can upload one WAV of up to 95 MB at a time. Recordings above 48 kHz are reduced to 48 kHz, and multichannel recordings are mixed down to stereo.

Quality, size and limitations
High quality: The MP3 is encoded with a variable bitrate of about 190 kbps; the loss is barely audible in music and speech.
Much smaller file: One minute of stereo WAV is about 10 MB, while the same length of MP3 is usually around 1.5 MB. For an even smaller file, use the Compress Audio tool.
Compatibility: Sample rates above 48 kHz are reduced to 48 kHz and more than two channels are mixed down to stereo.
Limitations: One file at a time, up to 95 MB (about 9 minutes of stereo WAV) and 3 hours.

Privacy and automatic deletion
Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.
The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.
