Compressing PDFs for strict file limits

Some application and document upload systems set a fairly strict limit such as 500 KB per file. Even a one-page ID scan or a document of a few pages easily goes over it. On this page the limit is already selected: you upload your PDF and the tool finds the sharpest version that fits under 500 KB.

The tool shrinks the photos and scans in your document step by step: it starts at 150 DPI and goes down to 72 DPI if needed. Text is not turned into images; it stays selectable and searchable. “500 KB” is counted as 500,000 bytes, so your file stays under the limit however the system counts it.

If the document can't fit into 500 KB without becoming hard to read, the tool tells you plainly the smallest size it could reach. For documents with many pages, deleting unnecessary pages or splitting the document usually solves the problem.

How to get a PDF under 500 KB in 3 steps

Quality, limits and what to know

  • The sharpest version is chosen: The tool tries high quality first and shrinks only as much as needed; a document that easily fits under 500 KB isn't blurred for nothing.

  • Text is preserved: Pages are not turned into images. Text, links, bookmarks, form fields and the OCR text layer of scanned documents are kept as they are.

  • 72 DPI minimum: To keep scanned text readable, images are never reduced below 72 DPI. That is why high-resolution scans with many pages don't always fit under 500 KB; the tool tells you clearly when this happens.

  • If it doesn't fit: Remove unnecessary pages with the Delete PDF Pages tool, or split the document into parts with Split PDF and upload them separately.

  • Size limit: Up to 25 MB per upload. Files are deleted from the server automatically after about 10 minutes.

Privacy and automatic deletion

Your files are sent to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The original file you upload is deleted as soon as processing finishes. The result file is kept only briefly so you can download it: an automatic clean-up job runs every minute and permanently deletes files older than 10 minutes. We therefore recommend downloading your result as soon as it is ready.

The download link only works for the user or browser session that started the job, and your files are never shared with other users. Our job log stores only details such as the file name, size and type of operation, never the file itself.

Is compressing a PDF to under 500 KB free?

Yes. The tool is free and works without an account. Guests have a 24-hour usage allowance per tool; a free account lets you process more files.

Will the result definitely be under 500 KB?

When the tool finds a result that fits the limit, the file is under 500,000 bytes; this holds for systems that count a KB as 1,000 bytes and for those that count it as 1,024 bytes. If it can't fit, it clearly shows the smallest size it could reach.

Will a document with many pages fit under 500 KB?

It depends on the document. Text-heavy PDFs often fit easily; high-resolution scans with many pages may not, because images are never reduced below 72 DPI to keep them readable. In that case, delete unnecessary pages or split the document.

How much quality is lost?

Only as much as needed. The tool tries high quality first; if the file fits the limit, it doesn't shrink it any further. Text stays sharp and selectable in every case; only photos and scans are reduced.

Can I choose a different limit?

Are my files safe?
