How does an Excel table become JSON?

JSON is the common language of web apps, APIs and databases, while Excel is where most data is actually prepared. Product catalogues, price lists, tables of regions and cities or translation strings are put together in Excel but need to reach the app as JSON. In the other direction, you may want to pull JSON from an API into Excel to check it or build a report.

The conversion is simple, but the details matter: the names in the header row become keys and each row becomes an object. Numbers should stay numbers, dates should be written in one consistent format (YYYY-MM-DD), empty cells should become null and accented letters should stay intact in UTF-8.

This tool turns Excel (XLSX) or CSV into a JSON array, and a JSON array into Excel. Nested objects open into dotted column names such as “address.city” and, if you like, are rebuilt as nested objects when you convert back to JSON. Everything happens in your browser; your data is not sent to a server.

02

Convert Excel to JSON in 3 steps

  1. Choose your file: Choose an Excel (XLSX), CSV or JSON file. If the Excel file has several sheets, choose the one to convert; the first 50 rows appear in the preview.

  2. Choose the output and settings: For Excel or CSV, JSON output is already selected; if you choose a JSON file, it's converted to Excel. If there's no header row, untick that option (rows are then written as arrays); to build nested objects from “a.b” headers, turn on the matching option.

  3. Download: Press “Convert”; an indented UTF-8 .json file or an .xlsx file with a bold, frozen header row downloads.

03

Who uses it, and for what?

  • Web and mobile apps: Turning a product, price or menu list prepared in Excel into the JSON your app reads.

  • Translation and content files: Turning key–text tables into JSON language files.

  • API testing: Preparing test data in Excel and turning it into a JSON array to use as request bodies.

  • Reporting: Filtering, sorting and sharing JSON from an API or a database export in Excel.

  • Data migration: Turning CSV exports into JSON records for document databases.

  • Open data: Pulling datasets published as JSON (regions, cities, statistics) into Excel to explore them.

04

Conversion rules and limits

  • Row = object: The names in the header row become keys; empty headers get names like “Column 3”, and if a name appears twice, _2 is added to the second one. Without a header row, each row becomes an array.

  • Types: Numbers from Excel are written as numbers, TRUE / FALSE values as true / false and dates as YYYY-MM-DD (with a time, YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS); empty cells become null. In a CSV every value is text; if you turn on “Convert numbers and dates”, amounts become numbers.

  • Nested JSON: When converting JSON to Excel, nested objects open into columns such as “address.city” and arrays are written into the cell as JSON text. When converting Excel back to JSON, the “Build nested objects from a.b headers” option restores the original structure.

  • Accepted JSON: An array of objects, an array of arrays, an object holding a single array (such as a “data” field) and JSON Lines files with one JSON record per line.

  • Formulas and formatting: The last calculated result of each formula is written; colours, formatting and charts don't go into the JSON.

  • Limits and privacy: Up to 25 MB and 200,000 rows. Your file isn't uploaded; the work happens in your browser and is cleared from memory when you close the tab.

Privacy and automatic deletion

This tool does not send your file to our server: all processing happens in your browser, on your device. The page is served with a security policy (Content-Security-Policy) that technically prevents the file's contents from being sent anywhere; no analytics or advertising scripts run on this page.

The result file is also created on your device and only you download it. It is cleared from the browser's memory when you close the tab or choose “New file”. Our server keeps no file name or content record of this processing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert Excel to JSON?

Choose your Excel file; JSON output is selected automatically. The names in the header row become keys and each row becomes a JSON object. Press “Convert” and an indented .json file downloads.

Can I convert JSON to Excel?

Yes. When you choose a JSON file, the output is Excel (XLSX). Every key in the objects becomes a column; nested objects open into columns such as “address.city”, and arrays are written into the cell as JSON text.

Are numbers written as text or as numbers in JSON?

Numbers from Excel are written as numbers (without quotes). Values from a CSV are text by default; if you turn on “Convert numbers and dates”, amounts become numbers and dates are written as YYYY-MM-DD. Values with leading zeros always stay text.

What do dates look like in JSON?

They use the ISO 8601 format: 2026-09-29, or 2026-09-29T14:30:00 for cells with a time. JavaScript, Python and databases recognise this format directly.

Do accented letters break in JSON?

No. JSON is always written as UTF-8, and letters such as é, ü, ñ or ç are kept as they are, without escape codes. If the source CSV was saved in an ANSI encoding or its letters were garbled, the tool fixes that first.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The conversion happens in your browser; the page technically blocks any outside connection. You can safely use it for tables with customer or product data.
