When you take the photo
- Stand in front of a plain white wall with no shadows on it.
- Look straight at the camera; mouth closed, natural expression, eyes open and clearly visible.
- Get even light on your face: face a window, with no flash glare or red eye.
- Lenses must not reflect or be tinted; frames must not cover your eyes.
- If you wear a headscarf, your face must be visible from chin to forehead, with no shadows on it.
- The photo must be taken within the last 6 months.

When you take the photo
- Square photo: 600 × 600 pixels, JPEG, at most 240 KB for the DV lottery; prints are 2 × 2 in.
- Plain white or off-white background; face the camera squarely with both eyes open.
- No glasses. No hat or head covering that hides the hairline, unless worn daily for religious reasons with the full face visible.
- DV lottery: take a new photo every year; don't reuse the photo from an earlier entry.
- Don't edit the photo: filters, retouching or a replaced background can disqualify it.
Source: US Department of State DV instructions (600 × 600 px, 240 kB or less, JPEG) and the travel.state.gov photo template (head height 50–69% of the photo). New instructions are published for each entry period; check them before you apply.
When you take the photo
- 35 × 45 mm, plain light background with no shadows.
- Your face (chin to top of head) should fill about 70–80% of the photo's height.
- Look at the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed.
- No reflections or tinted lenses; frames must not cover your eyes.
- The photo must be taken within the last 6 months.
Source: the ICAO photo guidelines linked from the European Commission's Schengen visa page (face 70–80%, taken within 6 months). In Germany, ID card and passport photos have been accepted since 1 May 2025 only when sent digitally by a registered photographer. Check the consulate's current notice.
When you take the photo
- Take it facing the camera in front of a plain, light background.
- Face in the centre; no hat and no sunglasses.
- Use a recent photo that shows the student as they look today.
- The system expects a 133 × 171 pixel JPG; the tool uses the highest quality toward the 20 KB floor and tells you if it can't be reached.
Source: notices of Turkey's provincial and district education directorates (133 × 171 pixels, JPG, over 20 KB; e.g. Bitlis Provincial Directorate of National Education, 2015). The 150 KB upper limit is the value given in school notices. If the upload screen asks for another size, follow the screen.
When you take the photo
- 4 × 6 cm (40 × 60 mm); many countries ask for a white background.
- Face the camera squarely, with your face centred.
- Follow your consulate's rules on glasses, head coverings and background colour.
- Use a recent photo; most offices want one taken within the last 6 months.
4 × 6 cm is a common size for visas and documents; the face proportion and background colour vary by country. Check the current notice of the consulate or office you apply to.
When you take the photo
- 3 × 4 cm (30 × 40 mm): a common size for school, work and membership documents.
- Plain light background; face centred and looking at the camera.
- Even light on your face, with no shadows or glare.
3 × 4 cm is a common document size; there is no single official standard. Check the rules of the office asking for the photo.
When you take the photo
- 4.5 × 6 cm: a common ID-photo size for school enrolment, job applications and other documents.
- Turkish ID cards and passports need a 50 × 60 mm biometric photo, not this size.
- Plain light background, looking straight at the camera, natural expression.
4.5 × 6 cm is a common ID-photo size; there is no single official standard. Check the rules of the office asking for the photo.
When you take the photo
- Enter the size the form asks for (mm or pixels) and the KB range, if any.
- If you give a pixel size, the resolution (dpi) only sets the printed size.
- Check the institution's rules on background, light and glasses separately.
With a custom size, the file's pixel size and file size follow only the values you enter.
Before you use it This tool only crops and sizes your photo and places it on a print sheet; it does not change the background or retouch your face (photo rules forbid that anyway). The sizes come from the rules institutions publish, but we can't guarantee your photo will be accepted: check the institution's current notice before you apply.
- The work is done in this tab, on your device.
- It doesn't change the background or retouch anything; you line your face up with the guides.
- No file is sent to our server; closing the tab clears everything.

What is a biometric photo?
A biometric photo is an ID photo whose size, proportions and shooting conditions are fixed so that a machine can compare the face. The ICAO guidelines used for passports and Schengen visas ask for a 35 × 45 mm photo in which the face fills about 70–80% of the height, on a plain light background, taken within the last 6 months. Turkey uses 50 × 60 mm with a white background for ID cards and passports.
The rules also cover how your face looks: look straight at the camera with your eyes open and clearly visible, in even light with no shadows, reflections or red eye. Glasses must not reflect or be tinted, and a head covering worn for religious reasons must leave the face visible from chin to forehead.
On this page the tool opens with the 35 × 45 mm size; choose 50 × 60 mm for Turkish documents. You line your face up with the crown, eye and chin guides, and the tool prepares the JPG at 300 dpi (413 × 531 or 591 × 709 pixels) and a print sheet. Everything happens in your browser; your photo is not sent to our server.
02
Make a biometric photo in 3 steps
Take it against a white wall: Stand in front of a plain white wall facing a window, and ask someone to take the photo with the phone at eye level. Then choose the photo.
Line it up with the guides: Choose 35 × 45 mm or 50 × 60 mm, then drag and zoom the photo: the top of your head on the red upper line, your chin on the lower line, your eyes in the green band.
Print: Have the 4 × 6 JPG printed at a photo kiosk without cropping, or print the PDF at home at 100% scale. Cut along the lines and check the size with a ruler.
03
Where is it needed?
Schengen visa: 35 × 45 mm photos for consulates and visa centres.
Turkish ID card and passport: 50 × 60 mm biometric photos, including applications at Turkish consulates abroad.
Residence permit in Turkey: The biometric photo asked for in foreigners' applications.
Other countries' passports: Many countries use the ICAO 35 × 45 mm format; check the authority's rules.
Digital forms: A 413 × 531 or 591 × 709 pixel JPG for forms that ask for a biometric-size file.
Several copies: One 4 × 6 print holds up to eight 35 × 45 mm copies or four 50 × 60 mm copies.
04
Biometric rules and the tool's limits
Size: 35 × 45 mm = 413 × 531 pixels at 300 dpi; 50 × 60 mm = 591 × 709 pixels. The face (chin to top of head) fills about 70–80% of the height; the guide shows this range.
Background: Plain and light (white for Turkish documents), with no shadows. The tool does not change the background, so take the photo against a white wall.
Face and expression: Look straight at the camera with your mouth closed and a neutral expression. Hair must not cover your eyes.
Glasses and head coverings: No reflections or tinted lenses, and frames must not cover the eyes. A religious head covering must leave the face visible from chin to forehead, with no shadows.
Printing: The 4 × 6 JPG holds several true-size copies; the PDF keeps wider margins and so may hold fewer. Turn off “Fit to page” and print at 100%.
No guarantee: The rules come from the ICAO guidelines and from Turkey's NVI (“Biometric photo specifications”); the office handling your application decides whether it accepts the photo. Check its current rules before you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a biometric photo?
It depends on the document: the ICAO format used for Schengen visas and many passports is 35 × 45 mm; Turkish ID cards and passports need 50 × 60 mm; US passports and visas use 2 × 2 inches. Choose the matching size in the tool.
How many pixels is a biometric photo?
At 300 dpi, 35 × 45 mm is 413 × 531 pixels and 50 × 60 mm is 591 × 709 pixels. The tool saves the file at this size with 300 dpi information. If a form asks for other pixel dimensions or a KB limit, choose “Custom size”.
Is a photo taken with a phone accepted?
If it follows the rules on size, plain background, even light and a neutral expression, it matters little where the photo was taken. You get better results if someone else takes it, holding the phone at eye level about 1–1.5 metres away. The office handling your application decides whether it accepts the photo.
Can I wear glasses in a biometric photo?
Under Turkey's NVI rules glasses are allowed if the lenses don't reflect, aren't tinted and the frames don't cover the eyes. Some applications, such as US visas, don't accept glasses at all.
Can I wear a headscarf?
A head covering worn for religious reasons is allowed; the face must be visible from chin to forehead with no shadows on it. The oval in the guide shows where your face should sit in the photo.
Can you make the background white?
No. Biometric rules do not accept edited photos; replacing the background, retouching or filters can get a photo rejected. Retaking the photo in front of a plain white wall is the safest way.
Is my photo sent anywhere?
No. The photo is processed in your browser and is not sent to our server; the page is served with a security policy that technically prevents this. No advertising or analytics scripts run on this page.
